Mary Karlet, CRNA, PhD has been a practicing CRNA for over 25 years and a long-time nurse anesthesia educator. A native of Detroit Michigan, she received her BSN in Nursing degree from Michigan State University, and MSN in nurse anesthesiology and PhD in physiology from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. She has been consultant to Washington University/St Louis Barnes Hospital, St. Louis, Missouri, Florida Gulf Coast University, Fort Myers, FL, and Western Carolina University, Asheville, NC for development of their nurse anesthesia programs. She is currently the Program Chair and Associate Professor of the Samford University Nurse Anesthesia Program in Birmingham Alabama.
In 2005 Dr. Karlet was awarded the Health Resources and Services Administration Advanced Education Nursing Achievement Award for her efforts in providing nurse anesthetists to rural locations in North Carolina and beyond.
Dr. Karlet has been a senior site reviewer for the AANA Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs since 1995. She has been a member of the AANA Foundation Education and Research Committee since 1998, and has been Co-Chairman of the committee since 2001.
Dr. Karlet has published extensively in the nurse anesthesia and nursing literature including the Journal of the AANA, International Journal of Trauma Nursing, Journal of PeriAnesthesia Nursing and chapters in Nurse Anesthesia and Clinical Guide to Pediatric Anesthesia. She is the editor of the review book Nurse Anesthesia Secrets.
